"Sergeant Andrey Timoshenkov, who was escorting a convoy of the Russian Reconciliation Center, stopped a car loaded with explosives by opening fire on it. Andrey was seriously injured when the car, driven by a suicide bomber, exploded," RT quoted information from the Russian Defense Ministry as saying.
Doctors at the Russian airbase Hmeymim in Latakia province tried their best to save Timoshenkov for 24 hours but were unsuccessful. He died on June 16.
According to Russian media, Timoshenkov was a marine from the Kaliningrad region. Russia has lost 11 soldiers since it began its anti-terrorist campaign in Syria on September 30, 2015, at the request of President Bashar al-Assad.
