Organic vegetables are attracting buyers
Organic vegetables are currently considered absolutely safe products for both producers and consumers.
Recently, the phrase “organic vegetables” has become increasingly familiar to many consumers in Hanoi. Although the price of organic vegetables is 3-4 times more expensive than the price of vegetables sold in the market or in supermarkets, it still attracts buyers because of the high quality and safety of this type of vegetable.

The demand for organic vegetables is increasing. |
In the past few months, Ms. Doan Thanh Loan in Trung Hoa ward, Cau Giay has often visited reputable stores that provide organic vegetables, tubers, and fruits. Realizing the risk of dirty food flooding the market and the difficulty in controlling product quality, she is very worried about the health of her family members. Through research, she learned that organic vegetables (vegetables grown with organic fertilizers, completely without using chemical fertilizers) are good for health and ensure food hygiene and safety, so she switched to buying these foods. The price of vegetables is 3-4 times more expensive than the price of vegetables sold in the market.
Ms. Doan Thanh Loan said: “Every day, my family buys an average of 30-40 thousand VND worth of vegetables and tubers. Vegetables cost about 20 thousand VND, buying cucumbers, tomatoes, potatoes... costs 40-50 thousand VND. Compared to vegetables sold outside, I feel safe so I still choose to buy them for my family. I still choose both safe and organic vegetables, but if I have the financial means, I will use organic vegetables because organic vegetables are fertilized entirely with organic fertilizers, not using chemical fertilizers, which is safer for health.”
Not only Ms. Loan but most consumers who choose organic vegetable products believe that these products are safer and of better quality than vegetables sold in markets and supermarkets.
Through a survey at organic vegetable stores, the listed prices are many times more expensive than the market price. Specifically, sweet cabbage, cabbage, Malabar spinach, and water spinach are all priced at 32,000 VND/kg, taro: 70,000 VND/kg, black pork 175,000 VND/kg, yellow melon 66,000 VND/kg, soursop 64,000 VND/kg, Dalat strawberries 240,000 VND/kg...
Organic vegetables are currently considered to be absolutely safe products for both producers and consumers. Most districts in Hanoi have stores selling this type of vegetable, and they also deliver to customers' homes if they want to order online or by phone. Mr. Tran Manh Chien, Director of the organic vegetable store chain Bac Tom, said that growing organic vegetables requires a PGS standard certificate (after 6 months of growing vegetables, they are recognized as organic vegetables). Vegetable prices are high due to many factors such as low productivity, the time from planting to harvesting is much longer than vegetables using chemical fertilizers...:
Mr. Chien said: “Organic vegetables are expensive because they are completely free of any chemicals, including chemical fertilizers, chemical pesticides, genetically modified materials, herbicides and growth stimulants. The principle of organic vegetable growing is to use biological measures, cultivating without using chemical fertilizers but only using organic fertilizers and rotten potatoes according to the correct process to ensure the necessary nutrients for vegetables, no chemical residues in the product, very safe for health”.

The organic vegetable growing process is strictly controlled in Thanh Xuan commune, Soc Son. |
In response to the great demand for clean vegetables in the market, in recent years, many vegetable growing areas in Hanoi have switched to growing organic vegetables. Thanh Xuan Commune, Soc Son District is one of the first organic vegetable growing areas in Hanoi. Currently, the organic vegetable production area of the commune has expanded to 24 hectares, supplying the market with 30 to 35 tons of vegetables per day. In the coming time, the commune plans to increase production by 10 hectares. With the characteristics of the Northern climate with 4 distinct seasons, "each season has its own food", Thanh Xuan Commune can provide a variety of more than 40 different types of vegetables and tubers. The model has contributed to ensuring stable income for vegetable growers. In addition, growing organic vegetables helps improve the soil, water environment, and the working environment of the farmers themselves.
Mr. Le Minh Quyen, Vice Chairman of Thanh Xuan Commune Farmers' Association, said that Soc Son organic vegetables have been registered as collective trademarks and are increasingly affirming their brand in the market. The vegetable growing process is strictly monitored, with 70 inspectors regularly conducting surprise checks on vegetable growing households. Farmers who violate regulations will not be granted organic vegetable certification:
“In our organic vegetable production model, farmers still lack capital to invest in production. To ensure that crops grow well as well as to industrialize production to increase the productivity of this vegetable area, farmers really need capital from projects and from all levels to invest in net houses, greenhouses or multi-purpose tillage machines so that farmers can free up some of their manual labor,” said Mr. Quyen.
According to the plan this year, Hanoi city will expand the area of organic vegetable cultivation to 50 hectares. However, organic vegetable products have high quality, high investment but unstable output, still through many intermediary distribution stages. Meanwhile, a part of the people do not know about organic vegetable products, and are still worried about mixing vegetables in mass quantities at clean vegetable stores. Obviously, the model of organic vegetable cultivation is expanded, more and more people will be able to use safe products, ensuring good health. /.
