Quynh Luu farmers earn 31 billion VND from growing spring corn

(Baonghean.vn) - Currently, farmers in Quynh Luu district (Nghe An) are urgently harvesting spring corn to continue the new production season. The expected corn yield is 48 quintals/ha.

Quynh Nghia commune has 100 hectares of spring corn production area, the locality considers corn as the main crop with 3 crops/year. Currently, people are urgently going to the fields to harvest corn and prepare the land for the new production season.

Ms. To Thi Khuyen's family in Hamlet 5, Quynh Nghia Commune, grows 4 sao of corn and is harvesting. They take care of it like every year, but this year, thanks to favorable weather, the corn yield is higher at 3.5 quintals/sao. Her family harvested 14 quintals of corn kernels, with the corn price of 7,000 VND/kg. After deducting expenses, her family earns 7 million VND/crop. Thus, each year, with 4 sao of land, her family grows corn and earns 21 million VND/year.

Quynh Nghia commune has 100 hectares of corn for spring crop production, with an expected average yield of 42 quintals/hectare and corn output of 420 tons/crop. Revenue from corn cultivation this spring crop is nearly 3 billion VND. In addition, farmers earn nearly 1 billion VND from intercropping peanuts with corn.

According to people's experience, in places where rice production is not effective, people have switched to growing corn, or grown corn on fertile land to rotate crops.

Some coastal localities such as Quynh Nghia, Quynh Minh and Quynh Bang have adopted corn as their main crop due to lack of water for production, because this is a drought-resistant crop and has high productivity.

Mr. Vu Van Duong - Vice Chairman of Quynh Bang Commune People's Committee said: The locality has 102 hectares of spring corn growing area, at this time, people are harvesting corn. In terms of efficiency, growing corn is not as good as growing vegetables in the locality, but in dry land with lack of water, corn is the most suitable crop. This crop, corn yield is estimated at 3.2-3.5 quintals/sao. The locality also suggested that the district should pay attention to and build an irrigation canal system to the commune to serve the people's production water.

Quynh Luu has 952 hectares of spring corn, the expected yield of the whole district is 48 quintals/ha, some localities grow spring corn with large areas such as Ngoc Son commune 109 hectares, Quynh Bang commune 102 hectares, Quynh Nghia 100 hectares. The total spring corn output of the whole district in 2016 is estimated at 4,569 tons/crop, with corn price of 7,000 VND/kg, revenue of over 31 billion VND/crop.
