(Baonghean.vn) - According to the disaster response plan for Nghe An province recently approved by the Provincial People's Committee (July 2016), for reservoirs with flood control valves such as Vuc Mau reservoir and Song Sao reservoir, a plan for evacuating people in the downstream area of the reservoir and in the Vuc Mau reservoir basin area needs to be developed when the reservoir water level exceeds +22m.

The Vuc Mau Lake project evacuated residents from 5 wards in Hoang Mai town in the downstream area of the lake, including Quynh Thien, Quynh Di, Quynh Trang, Quynh Loc, and Mai Hung, and 3 communes in the lake basin area, including Quynh Thang, Tan Thang, and Quynh Tan.

Vuc Mau is the largest irrigation reservoir in Nghe An province, with a usable water capacity of approximately 75 million cubic meters and a flood control capacity of about 110 million cubic meters. It is a long-standing reservoir that has recently been renovated and upgraded. On the night of September 30th and the day of October 1st, 2013, heavy rain combined with the release of water from Vuc Mau reservoir caused Hoang Mai town and many communes in Quynh Luu district to be submerged. This was the largest flood to occur in Hoang Mai town in decades. Since then, the release of water from Vuc Mau reservoir has been a matter of public concern. |
Regarding the Song Sao reservoir, when releasing floodwaters, it is necessary to evacuate four communes and towns in Nghia Dan district: Nghia Binh, Nghia Hoi, Nghia Trung, and the town.
The estimated number of people needing to be evacuated is 38,647 in Nghia Dan and Hoang Mai districts, including 13,880 people in Nghia Dan district and the downstream area of Song Sao reservoir, 24,769 people in Hoang Mai town and the Vuc Mau reservoir area, and 2,550 people in Quynh Luu district in the Vuc Mau reservoir area.
