The accident happened at 3:40 p.m., when Vinh was driving his family's excavator to dredge the N13 irrigation canal for the locality. While driving the excavator through the culvert to Hamlet 5, the excavator overturned, causing Vinh to die on the spot, his body trapped under the machine.

Upon receiving the news, local people and authorities promptly arrived at the scene of the accident to remove his body. However, due to the dozens of tons of weight of the excavator pressing down on him, the local authorities sent another excavator to rescue him but were unsuccessful.
