Mohammed Morsi was Egypt's first democratically elected president and was overthrown by the military following a coup in 2013.

In June 2015, a Cairo criminal court sentenced Morsi to death for conspiring to escape prison during the 2011 uprising against former President Hosni Mubarak and life imprisonment for spying for Qatar.

Egypt's ousted president is also facing the death penalty on a series of other charges, including allegedly inciting the killing of protesters during the coup more than three years ago.
