AP reports that leaders of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) and the European Union (EU) have signed a "historic agreement" to strengthen defense cooperation in the face of new challenges. The agreement, signed on July 8th in Warsaw, Poland, just before the opening of the NATO summit also in the capital, demonstrates the solidarity of the Western world in confronting threats from the East and South.

2. Britain will definitely have a female prime minister in the next term.
In the second round of voting on July 7th, Conservative MPs in the UK gave an overwhelming 199 votes to Home Secretary Theresa May. Energy and Climate Change Secretary Andrea Leadsom secured 84 votes, placing her second. Meanwhile, the only male candidate, Justice Secretary Michael Gove, was eliminated with only 46 votes, two fewer than in the first round of voting two days earlier.
The front pages of British newspapers are all headlined about the two-horse race between the two "iron ladies" and that Britain will have its second female Prime Minister in history.
In the coming weeks, both May and Leadsom will campaign across the UK to garner support from around 150,000 core Conservative Party members for the election of a new Prime Minister.

4. China fires live missiles in military exercises in the South China Sea.
On July 9, official Chinese media reported on naval exercises in the Paracel Islands area of the South China Sea, days before the Permanent Court of Arbitration (PCA) in The Hague, Netherlands, was scheduled to issue its ruling on the Philippines' lawsuit against China regarding sovereignty disputes in the South China Sea.
According to the PLA Daily, the Chinese navy conducted "combat" exercises with "live missiles" on July 8 in the area between the Paracel Islands and Hainan Island. China announced that the exercises in the Paracel Islands area would last a week, from July 5-11, meaning they would conclude just before the PCA ruling.
This military exercise, encompassing Vietnam's Hoang Sa (Paracel) Islands, constitutes a serious violation of Vietnam's sovereignty over the Hoang Sa Islands, goes against the common understanding of the high-level leaders of the two countries, and violates international law, including the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea and the Declaration on the Conduct of Parties in the South China Sea (DOC).
