(Baonghean.vn) - Two strong earthquakes occurred in the northwestern coastal area of ​​Ecuador on the night of July 10 (local time). These are the two latest earthquakes since the devastating earthquake that occurred in April 2016, killing hundreds of people in this country. Currently, authorities said there is no exact number of damage or casualties caused by these earthquakes.

The first quake had a magnitude of 5.9 and was centered about 41 kilometers south of the coastal city of Esmeraldas, the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) said. The second quake, which struck about 10 minutes later in the same location, had a magnitude of 6.4. The epicenters of both quakes were about 35 kilometers below the sea surface.

People in the capital Quito, Ecuador also felt the shaking caused by the two earthquakes.

The July 10 earthquakes were near where a historic quake struck the town of Pedernales on April 16. That devastating earthquake is considered the worst natural disaster to hit Ecuador in decades, killing 663 people and leaving nearly 29,000 homeless. Ecuador’s Geophysical Institute said there have been more than 2,100 aftershocks since the tragic event.
