“In the past, my family mainly grew lychee, but then we tried growing longan. After harvesting, we found that longan had a higher yield and value than lychee, so our family switched to growing more ivy. Compared to growing other fruit trees, growing longan is 5 times more profitable,” Mr. Sinh shared.
Sharing the joy of a good longan season, Ms. Trinh Thi Oanh in Hamlet 6 is also actively going to the garden to take care of and look after the longan garden to prepare for harvest. Her family grows 25 grafted Hung Yen longan trees and some other longan varieties. Although there is still about half a month until the harvest, many traders have placed orders to buy longan at prices ranging from 20,000-25,000 VND/kg.
According to Ms. Oanh, in 17 years of growing longan, this year's longan crop is the best. Explaining the good longan crop, Ms. Oanh said that the cold weather at the beginning of the year prevented pests and diseases from developing, along with a lot of rain, and especially better care compared to previous years, so the yield was high. This year's longan crop, her family estimates that they will harvest over 4 tons of longan, earning a profit of 55-60 million VND.

Mr. Nguyen Van Nam - Agricultural Extension Officer of Quynh Thang Commune said: Being a mountainous commune with a large hilly area, it is very suitable for people to grow fruit trees. The introduction of longan varieties to grow on hilly land has proven effective, giving high productivity. Currently, people are preparing to harvest longan, most of this year people have had a good harvest. The locality will have a policy to encourage people to expand the planting of longan trees, thereby soon building the Quynh Thang longan brand to promote to the market.
Longan trees are planted for 3 years to produce the first harvest, then they will continue to produce harvests every 1 year. To produce many fruits and harvest them in the right season, the most necessary work after harvesting is pruning, shaping the canopy, caring for and restoring the health of the tree. This is a very important job, it ensures the recovery, growth and development of the tree after 5-6 months of fruit growing and gives the tree strength to produce the next crop of fruit. Immediately after this work is hoeing, loosening the roots, and fertilizing the tree. |
