(Baonghean.vn) - German Chancellor Angela Merkel firmly refused on July 28 to reverse her stance on immigration policy following a series of brutal attacks in recent times.

At a press conference in Berlin, Merkel said the attackers “wanted to undermine our sense of community, of openness and willingness to help those in need. We firmly reject that.”

Chancellor Merkel cut short her summer vacation in the north to return to Berlin for her annual press conference. This was her first time answering questions following four brutal attacks in southern Germany, three of which were carried out by asylum seekers.

The German Chancellor is facing criticism over her open-door policy for refugees, which has allowed radical Islamic terrorism to take root in Germany.

At the press conference, Merkel affirmed that the attacks were "shocking, outrageous, and saddening," but that they were not a sign that the authorities had lost control.

"These kinds of acts can happen anywhere," she said, referring to a series of deadly attacks in France, Belgium, Türkiye, and the state of Florida (USA), as well as in Germany.

However, she also reiterated that since the open border policy came into effect last year, Germany has received 1.1 million migrants and refugees, mainly from Syria.

"That is our historical responsibility and also the challenge of the era of globalization," she affirmed.

Meanwhile, opposition parties continue to criticize Merkel's policies as flawed and call for urgent action. German Interior Minister Joachim Herrmann reiterated his proposal to limit refugee entry into Germany at a press conference today.

“Extremist Islamic terrorists have arrived in Bravia. We are awaiting urgent action from the federal government and from Europe – now is the time to act,” said Joachim.
