Taxi driver who dumped female supervisor's body in river charged with two crimes
Tien confessed that he was afraid of being fired because he did not have enough 300,000 VND to pay the "order" to the taxi company, so he murdered the female passenger to steal her wallet and phone.
On July 6, Ha Tinh police issued a decision to prosecute and detain Nguyen Van Tien (26 years old, residing in Thach Linh ward, Ha Tinh city) for two crimes of Murder and Robbery.
According to the investigation documents, Tien is a driver for a taxi company in Ha Tinh. At 6:30 p.m. on July 3, Pham Thi Oanh (23 years old, 4th year student majoring in Preschool Education, Hue University of Education) went to Ha Tinh to take the national high school exam and waved at Tien to take her from Ha Tinh city to Thach Ha commune to attend church. At around 9 p.m., Tien returned to pick her up at her friend's house, and on the way back, he had the intention of killing and robbing her.
To carry out his plan, Tien drove around in circles late at night. Ms. Oanh felt uneasy, so she texted an acquaintance to express her concern, then told him to stop the car. However, Tien locked the door, pushed the driver's seat back, and then leaned over to strangle the female supervisor to death. He stole a handbag, a cell phone, and 250,000 VND.

Upon receiving a report from Hue University of Education about the invigilator going missing after the exam day, many working groups of Ha Tinh City Police reviewed the system and summoned a number of taxi drivers, including Tien.
After many hours of "fighting with the mind", at 8am on July 5, Tien confessed and said he dumped the female supervisor's body under Su bridge (Thach Ha district), about 5km from the crime scene. That afternoon, the victim's body was recovered.
Tien admitted that he was 300,000 VND short that day to pay the taxi company, otherwise he would be fired, so he was desperate and took the risk.

Authorities said Tien was stubborn and quiet, and had been administratively punished by the government for theft. After finishing 9th grade, he went to work in the South, then returned to his hometown to work for taxi companies, changing jobs 4 times.
A lawyer from the Ha Tinh Bar Association said that with the two charges of murder and robbery, suspect Tien faces a penalty of up to life imprisonment or the death penalty. "Whether or not he is sentenced to death depends on the suspect's attitude as well as compensation for the losses caused to the victim's family," the lawyer said. |
