Something that Ferrari absolutely hates.

The Ferrari One-Off program began a few years ago when Japanese Ferrari collector Junichiro Hiramatsu requested something special to commemorate his story with the supercar manufacturer. The result was the SP1, developed based on the F430, and the positive response from that project convinced Ferrari that there was a market for such models.

But how do you order a one-of-a-kind Ferrari? It's not as simple as just going to Maranello and knocking on the door with a blank check in hand.

Here are five things customers must do to have a chance to own a unique Ferrari, as revealed by the company's commercial director to Autocar.

As a Ferrari enthusiast and owner of a Ferrari, I am a Ferrari driver.

No one can buy an invitation to participate in the One-Off program, and Ferrari doesn't endorse it. Instead, the company assesses the owner's suitability for events like the Festival of Speed and the unique qualities they possess. A passion for everything that comes from Maranello is a key consideration.

"When faced with a customer who loves our special editions or is looking for something different, we can offer the One-Off program. Customer choice is very important. We try to select people who live and breathe Ferrari and understand the value of a one-off car," Galliera stated.

Willing to invest time

Creating your own Ferrari can take anywhere from 18 to 24 months, including regular consultations with engineers and designers in Maranello. "Just like developing a house, the more changes, the longer it takes. It also depends on how different and special the car is to your specifications."

Customers are increasingly coming to Maranello in person to watch the Ferrari team at work. It's a significant investment of time. They're essentially employees: sitting alongside the designers and engineers. The company takes input from customers whenever someone has an idea, such as wanting a car inspired by Ferrari's history or racing.

No pink required.

Key technical details like the engine and chassis are always standard, but everything else can be changed. For example, the 458 MM Speciale's aerodynamics have been fundamentally customized.

However, there are things Ferrari will never accept, no matter how many zeros are on the check. Galliera said: "You have to be steadfast to the brand. So if someone asks for a pink Ferrari, the answer is no. If they ask for a GTC4 Lusso with racing characteristics, the answer is no. If the special offer doesn't match the car's status, then no matter how much money is offered, the answer is no. Ferrari's first and foremost priority is performance, which cannot be compromised over design."

Be patient.

The One-Off program only produces a maximum of three cars per year. And all cars have already been sold out until 2021, according to Galliera. The waiting list for customers is incredibly long. In addition, there is a large volume of demand that Ferrari cannot fulfill.

To own a unique Ferrari, you need a lot of money. The price depends on the chassis type and other features customized to the customer's wishes. The figure can be as high as $3.3 million.

Ready to drive

While creating rare models, Ferrari still wants them to be used and driven on the road. These exceptional creations may reside in a beautiful museum or belong to a private collection, but it's even better when they're all on the road. "We want our customers to take their cars out into the real world. That's really important," Galliera revealed.

However, customers are not obligated to display their cars at events like the Festival of Speed if they prefer more privacy. The car's presence largely depends on the owner, and Ferrari respects its customers' wishes. The only thing the supercar manufacturer wants is for them to drive and enjoy it.
