Guardiola has first win with Man City

July 29, 2016 06:09

After a 1-1 draw with Dortmund after 90 minutes of play, the English representative defeated their opponent 6-5 in the penalty shootout thanks to the excellent performance of reserve goalkeeper Angus Gunn.

Man City started with a lineup that included many substitutes. Among them were 18-year-old defender Tosin Adarabioyo and new signing Oleksandr Zinchenko. Leading the attack was Kelechi Iheanacho, who was warned by Guardiola a few days ago for being overweight. Dortmund saw this match as an opportunity to continue testing their new recruits, naming Marc Bartra, Sebastian Rode, Emre Mor and Ousmane Dembele in the starting lineup.

The first minutes of the match were even, but Man City almost paid the price due to two careless tackles by goalkeeper Willy Caballero. The referee had to let the players of both teams take a water break after 24 minutes of the first half due to the 31 degree heat in Shenzhen (China).

At that time, the whole match had only one shot on target, by Iheanacho. The Nigerian striker continued to play energetically, had a few good combinations with Zinchenko but could not cause any danger. In the 45+1 minute, Iheanacho had a great chance to open the score, but could not beat goalkeeper Roman Burki in the face-off.

Meanwhile, Dembele, the right winger who made Man Utd miserable in the match nearly a week ago, was Dortmund's bright spot.

In the second half, both teams made a series of substitutions. In the 76th minute, Gonzalo Castro charged down, facing goalkeeper Angus Gunn but could not score. Three minutes later, Aleix Garcia passed the ball to David Silva. The Spanish international crossed the ball past goalkeeper Roman Burki, allowing Sergio Aguero to easily put the ball into an empty net to score the first goal under Guardiola.

In the remaining minutes of the second half, Guardiola brought on two new attackers who had joined the team after Euro 2016, Nolito and Raheem Sterling. However, Dortmund were the ones to score. In the 90+3 minute, 17-year-old American midfielder Christian Pulisic equalized for the home team. This goal came from a corner kick. Receiving the ball from Shinji Kagawa, Pulisic fired a low shot, through the crowd of players and between the legs of goalkeeper Angus Gunn.

In the shootout, Felix Passlack and Aleix Garcia both missed their first kicks. Both teams made their next five. Sterling then Jacob Bruun Larsen missed their next kicks. In the eighth kick, Angelino scored for Man City. Meanwhile, Mikel Merino's shot was saved by Angus Gunn. This was Gunn's third save of the shootout.

The first win under Pep Guardiola brought positive signs for Man City. The fans of this team were pleased with the victory over Dortmund, who defeated Man Utd 4-1 nearly a week ago. After this match, Man City will play a friendly against Arsenal on August 7.
