On June 29, Que Phong District Police received a report from Ms. Vi Thi Phuong (born in 1952) in Kim Khe village, Chau Kim commune and Nguyen Thi Binh (born in 1965) in Hai Lam 1 village, Que Son commune about being tricked by 2 men for 2 taels of gold that morning. At the investigation agency, the two subjects confessed that at 4:00 a.m. on June 29, Thanh and Ke rode a motorbike from Vinh City to Que Phong District. When they reached Thai Hoa Town, Thanh stopped to buy a gold-colored metal necklace (fake gold) for 100,000 VND. Next, they rode along National Highway 48 to Que Phong District. With the intention of taking advantage of people's lack of knowledge and ability to distinguish and identify assets when worn on their bodies, along the way, the two discussed using this fake gold to swindle people from the communes in Que Phong District.
To carry out the above trick, Ke pretended to be a Laotian bringing MSG and gold to Vietnam to sell, while Thanh pretended to be a trader buying MSG. When he discovered the victim, Thanh approached Ke, who was standing about 3-4 meters away. Thanh told the victim that there was a Laotian man in front who wanted to sell MSG, and asked the victim to meet that Laotian man to help Thanh bargain to buy MSG at a cheap price. If he could buy it at a cheap price, Ke would pay him 1 million VND.
During the MSG sale, Ke will ask the victim if there is a gold shop nearby. Thanh will whisper to the victim not to tell them, then Ke will show them a fake gold necklace. Thanh will then tell the victim that Lao gold is very valuable. If the victim helps Thanh convince Ke to sell the necklace at a cheap price, Thanh will "deduct" 2 million VND from the victim. If the victim agrees, Ke will say he will not sell the gold but will only exchange it for 2 earrings or a necklace.
After collecting evidence and investigating, the investigation agency executed an emergency arrest warrant for the two subjects. During the arrest, the police discovered and seized 6 gold necklaces in Nguyen Hai Thanh's handbag, and 3 pairs of gold earrings in Tran Nhat Ke's bag. At the investigation agency, they confessed that the gold necklaces were fake gold, and the 3 pairs of gold earrings were property obtained through fraud.

According to the Que Phong District Property Valuation Council, the three gold earrings weighed 3 taels and were worth 10.2 million VND. The Investigation Police Agency has initiated a case and prosecuted two suspects for fraud and property appropriation under Clause 1, Article 139 of the Penal Code. In particular, Tran Nhat Ke had a previous conviction for illegal drug trafficking; Nguyen Hai Thanh was granted bail due to his family's request and the crime was less serious.
