Balut (fertilized duck egg) is a popular dish in Vietnam because it is high in protein and difficult to digest, making it suitable for breakfast.

According to Associate Professor Dr. Nguyen Thi Lam, Deputy Director of the National Institute of Nutrition, the calorie intake at breakfast should account for 20-30% of the total daily calorie intake. Among the various options, fertilized duck eggs are a highly nutritious food that is very suitable for this important meal.

Nutritional content

Associate Professor Lam stated that a fertilized duck egg contains 182 kcal of energy, 13.6 grams of protein, 12.4 grams of lipids, 82 mg of calcium, 212 grams of phosphorus, and 600 mg of cholesterol. It also contains a significant amount of beta-carotene, vitamins A, B, and C, iron, and more.

After a long period of 10-12 hours since the last meal of the previous day, the energy from eggs is ideal for boosting our physical and mental activity.

According to Traditional Medicine Practitioner Bui Hong Minh, Chairman of the Ba Dinh Traditional Medicine Association, balut (fertilized duck egg) is a very nutritious food, according to both Eastern and Western medicine. Therefore, balut is considered a medicinal food that nourishes the blood, improves intelligence, promotes rapid physical growth, and enhances sexual function. However, it is difficult to digest due to its high protein and cholesterol content, making it suitable for consumption in the morning.

When we eat, our bodies undergo a metabolic process, which is when the body begins to burn calories. After breakfast, calorie consumption is at its peak, so with the abundant energy from fertilized duck eggs, the body can quickly absorb and burn it. Conversely, in the evening, when the body is less active, we should avoid eating this dish because it can easily cause bloating and indigestion.

Who should eat fertilized duck eggs?

ButHealthy adults:Balut (fertilized duck egg) can be eaten daily, but it shouldn't be consumed too frequently. Conversely, obese people, the elderly, and patients with high blood pressure, diabetes, dyslipidemia, and cardiovascular disease should limit their consumption of this dish.

ButPeople who are thin and want to gain weight:Balut (fertilized duck egg) is a preferred choice for thin people looking to gain weight. Note that balut is rich in vitamin A and contains provitamin A, so when eating it, you need to consume enough fat to dissolve it. Only then will your body fully absorb the nutrients in balut.

- Children over 5 years old:At this age, children can begin to get acquainted with fertilized duck eggs. However, they should only be given half an egg at a time, once or twice a week, because their digestive system is still developing, to avoid bloating and indigestion.

- What nutrition do pregnant women need?Basically, this is a highly nutritious dish, and therefore very good for pregnant women. It's important to note that because fertilized duck eggs are so rich in nutrients, they shouldn't be eaten daily. Pregnant women should eat two eggs per week, but not two at the same time. When eating them, avoid eating them with Vietnamese coriander (rau răm) as this herb is harmful to the fetus.

Pregnant women in the late stages of pregnancy should pay attention to their diet as recommended by their doctor because fertilized duck eggs are high in protein, and eating too many can lead to indigestion and increased cholesterol levels. In the final stages of pregnancy, consuming too much energy is also not good for pregnant women.
