Hungary follows Britain in holding referendum

Hungary will hold a referendum on its quota policy for immigrant resettlement.

Hungarians will be asked whether they accept the European Union's quota system for future resettlement.

The question would be: “Do you want the European Union to be allowed to decide whether non-Hungarians can stay in the country without the consent of the Hungarian Parliament?”

Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban has strongly opposed EU plans to relocate 160,000 migrants to other countries within the bloc using mandatory quotas under a scheme approved by several EU members.

Mr Orban has said the election will give people a chance to stand up for Hungary's sovereignty.

“Brussels must stop, we must stop the immigration policies because they are against the will of the European people,” Hungarian Foreign and Trade Minister Peter Sziijarto said in a radio interview.

“One of the biggest problems in the European Union is that the European political class is pursuing a policy that completely disregards the opinions of its citizens and often goes against their will,” said Peter Sziijarto.

Mr Szijjarto believes that the EU's current flawed immigration policy could even endanger EU unity; he also argues that the EU's open border policies created the Brexit vote in the UK.

“The best way to regain the strength of this continent is to pursue a policy that takes the people into account,” he said.

That is why he said Hungary will hold a referendum on mandatory settlement quotas because this is a very important issue on which people must express their opinions.”./.
