The US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) said the average global temperature in May 2016 was 60.17 degrees Fahrenheit (15.65 degrees Celsius), 1.57 degrees Fahrenheit (0.87 degrees Celsius) above the 20th-century average, and broke the record for the highest temperature ever recorded in May in history, 15.61 degrees Celsius.
This is the first time since November 2015 that the Earth's average temperature has not been more than 1 degree Celsius higher than the 20th century average.
Since the beginning of 2016, the world's average temperature has been 55.5 degrees Fahrenheit (13.06 degrees Celsius), 0.43 degrees higher than the same period last year.
NOAA Director Deke Arndt said the cause of the current record-breaking heat wave around the world is human-caused and the El Nino effect.
