Vietnam discovers Senegal peanuts infected with dangerous weevils

The decision was made after Vietnamese authorities discovered more than 943 tons of peanuts originating from Senegal infected with two dangerous weevils.

Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development Cao Duc Phat has just signed a decision to temporarily suspend the import of peanuts (Arachis hypogaea) from Senegal. This decision will take effect after 60 days from (July 11).

Previously, from February 18, 2016 to June 14, 2016, authorities discovered 48 peanut containers, with a total weight of more than 943 tons, infected with live Trogoderma granarium Everts and Caryedon serratus Oliveier weevils, imported from Senegal to Vietnam via Hai Phong port.

These are two extremely dangerous weevil species on the list of plant quarantine objects of Vietnam and are not yet present in our country. In particular, the Trogoderma granarium Everts weevil is in the list of 100 most dangerous invasive alien species in the world.

This weevil species can cause great economic losses because it directly affects the quality of agricultural products, as well as causing loss of export markets for Vietnamese agricultural products if it is allowed to enter the country.

The Plant Protection Department has sent the above notice to the national plant protection agency of Senegal in accordance with international practice and Vietnam's plant quarantine regulations.
