Canada will lead a multinational military force that includes a frigate, a fleet and six fighter jets, as Canada’s new contribution to NATO’s efforts to boost its presence in Eastern Europe, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said on July 8.
Earlier, late last month, Canadian Defense Minister Harjit Sajjan announced that Ottawa would establish a permanent rotating NATO fleet to strengthen the bloc's defense posture in Eastern and Central Europe.
“The Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) will deploy a frigate to coordinate operations with NATO naval forces in the region. Canada will also deploy a task force of six CF-18 fighter jets to conduct routine inspection and surveillance operations in Europe.
Prime Minister Trudeau also announced that Canadian fleets will be stationed in Latvia. “We stand ready to support NATO, with the best soldiers, sailors and airmen from our country and from around the world,” he said.
The deployment will be Canada's largest and most permanent military presence in Europe in a decade, Prime Minister Trudeau said.
Earlier, in his speech to the US Congress on June 29, President Barack Obama asked Canada to contribute fully to the common security situation. According to Mr. Obama, the Canadian armed forces are very elite, so NATO and the world need more cooperation and support from this country.
In another development, NATO announced that Canada is near the bottom of the list - 23rd out of 28 member countries of the bloc in terms of defense spending.
