Manchester United's first home game of the new season at Old Trafford saw record signing Paul Pogba make his debut, Rooney provide an assist, and Ibrahimovic score a brace.

Man Utd opened the scoring in the 36th minute when Ibrahimovic rose high to head the ball into the Southampton net from a Rooney cross. At the start of the second half, Luke Shaw was fouled by Claise inside the penalty area, and Ibrahimovic successfully converted the resulting penalty to seal a 2-0 victory.

The Swedish striker once again made his mark at Man Utd by scoring in his third consecutive official match. In the two previous games, Ibrahimovic's goals secured the FA Community Shield and the top spot in the Premier League for Man Utd.

Winning the early match also helped Man Utd put pressure on rivals like Chelsea, Man City and Liverpool.

This past summer, Man Utd set a world transfer record with Paul Pogba, as well as completing two expensive signings in Eric Bailly and Henrik Mkhitaryan. However, it is Ibrahimovic, who was signed on a free transfer, who has had a direct impact on the team so far. This is somewhat surprising, as Ibrahimovic was 34 years old when he moved to a physically demanding league like the Premier League. Ibrahimovic is currently leading the top scorer list with three goals, one ahead of Philippe Coutinho of Liverpool.

The arrival of a world-class striker like Ibrahimovic has made Man Utd far more dangerous than under Van Gaal. Ibrahimovic's movement and diverse finishing abilities have helped Man Utd solve problems in difficult moments, something the team failed to do last season. Ibrahimovic's opening goal was a clear example, especially when Man Utd faced a tightly-playing and disciplined Southampton side.

In last night's match, manager Mourinho began to show his philosophy at Man Utd. After a long period of possession under Van Gaal, Man Utd secured a victory at Old Trafford despite having significantly less control of the ball. The home team only possessed the ball for 43% of the time, but the solidity of their defense and the composure of their attack decided the match.

Another notable aspect of Mourinho's approach is his continued use of midfielder Mkhitaryan as a substitute. The Armenian midfielder only came on as a substitute for Mata in the 76th minute and had few opportunities to showcase his skills as the match was already decided. Mourinho still prioritized strength in midfield, deploying the tall Fellaini alongside Pogba.

Four years ago, Pogba left Old Trafford without making a single Premier League start. However, his return has kept Manchester United fans eagerly anticipating his debut all summer.

This was only Pogba's first game since the Euro 2016 final. The world's most expensive player is regaining his form, but the positive impact he made shows why Man Utd were willing to spend so much money on him. Pogba was the player with the most touches and passes in the opponent's half for Man Utd, which means he put a lot of pressure on the Southampton defense.

As for Southampton, the team is still in the process of adjusting to its new squad after a summer overhaul. Key players like Sadio Mane, Graziano Pelle, and Victor Wanyama left along with manager Ronald Koeman. Against Man Utd, Southampton had the mental strength of having won two consecutive matches at Old Trafford, but things didn't work out on this third attempt.

New manager Claude Puel probably couldn't have imagined he would continue to be "tormented" by Ibrahimovic even after moving to England. The two goals against Southampton marked Ibrahimovic's 13th goal in eight league matches against Puel's team. Prior to that, Ibrahimovic had scored numerous goals against his former club, Nice, when he played for PSG.
