Being defamed on Facebook, blocking the road and killing a colleague

Discovering his co-worker dozing off at work, Hieu quickly took a photo with his phone and posted it on his personal Facebook with a sarcastic comment. Furious, the person who was humiliated later blocked the road and stabbed his co-worker to death.

After 1 day of trial, on the afternoon of August 16, the first instance panel of judges found that the indictment against the defendants was well-founded and in accordance with the law, so they decided to sentence Giap Quang Duyet (born 1970, Yen Son commune, Luc Nam, Bac Giang) to 11 years in prison, according to the provisions of Clause 2, Article 93 of the Criminal Code.

In connection with the case, Ha Van Hao (born in 1988, residing in Dong Thanh commune, Thanh Ba, Phu Tho) was also sentenced by the court to 4 months and 17 days in prison for “Disturbing public order”, the same amount of time he was detained. The victim in the case was Nguyen Van Hieu (born in 1984), from Hung Yen.

The case shows that Giap Quang Duyet and Nguyen Van Hieu were both employees of a company in Bac Tu Liem district. Both of them were assigned by the company's leaders to monitor and remind workers who were late for work.

In early 2015, because Hieu was late for work several times, he was “warned” by Duyệt. From then on, the two workers’ supervisors often argued with each other. On September 7, 2015, Hieu arrived at the company and discovered Duyệt dozing off in the security room.

Having been resentful for so long, the person who Duyet had reminded to be late for work immediately used his phone to take a few pictures of his late colleague. Next, to retaliate against his colleague, Mr. Hieu immediately posted a picture of Duyet dozing off on his personal Facebook with the comment: "This is an excellent individual of type A".

Being humiliated on social media, Duyet was angry and had the intention to “deal with” his colleague. To carry out his plan, on the morning of September 9, 2015, the subject who was humiliated on Facebook immediately prepared a wooden stick and a switchblade to carry with him, then ambushed Hieu on his way to work.

Having been “informed” by a colleague, Mr. Hieu also prepared a knife, an iron chain and invited his brother-in-law, Ha Van Hao, to go with him for protection. Meeting at a crossroads, Mr. Hieu and Hao immediately attacked Duyet. And then, while being attacked by the other side, Duyet pulled out a switchblade and stabbed Mr. Hieu once in the chest.

As a result, Mr. Hieu died before he could be taken to the hospital for emergency treatment. Later, a forensic examination showed that the victim had been stabbed in the lung and the cause of death was acute blood loss. Upon learning of his colleague's death, Duyet also went to the police station to surrender that same day.

In court, both defendants confessed to the crimes as stated in the indictment. As for Giap Quang Duyet, the investigation determined that the defendant also suffered 6% injuries due to being beaten by Hieu and Hao.
