With the attraction and interest of many elderly people, Vinamilk also organized activities to measure bone density, consult on specialized products for the elderly, and invited prestigious doctors to participate in consulting and sharing things to note when taking care of health for themselves and the elderly in the program. With the enthusiastic response of many elderly people and many questions related to better health care for themselves and their families, the July seminars ended with more success.
At the program, Dr. Nguyen Hoang Le - Lecturer of Military Medical Academy, liver and gallbladder specialist at Hospital 103 - Hanoi had a very good sharing about health and proper nutrition for the elderly. Dr. Nguyen Hoang Le said: "Medical statistics show that about 95% of the elderly have illnesses, mainly chronic non-communicable diseases, and over 70% of the elderly have to work to earn a living with the support of their children and family, only more than 25% of the elderly live on pensions or social benefits. And of the total number of elderly people, only 5% are in good health, the remaining about 80% are in average or poor health, and 15% are sick."
“The elderly have the following physiological characteristics: forgetfulness, difficulty concentrating, sleep disorders, insensitivity to hunger, satiety, thirst, decreased digestive frequency, decreased chewing ability, metabolic disorders leading to glucose intolerance, fatty liver, etc. The causes are decreased digestive enzymes, weak teeth, ineffective functioning of the digestive system, neurodegeneration, decreased resistance, and an unreasonable lifestyle (eating, working) when young.

Consequences of an unreasonable diet include: lack of protein and energy leading to malnutrition; excess animal fat, lack of exercise leading to overweight and cardiovascular disease; lack of water causing constipation; lack of calcium and vitamin D leading to osteoporosis; excess salt leading to high blood pressure... Digestive problems that the elderly often encounter: when the elderly lose teeth, they are not given much attention, they only think "it is purely aesthetic" and "if teeth are weak, choose suitable food" and choose to eat liquid food. Consequences: food is not chewed and partially digested by saliva, leading to the stomach having to "endure", the pylorus does not open for food to go down, leading to stagnation in the stomach and bloating, indigestion."
“Elderly people often do not drink enough water, because the “water shortage” center in the brain is less active, so they do not feel thirsty, leading to dry skin, bitter mouth, rapid heartbeat, and difficulty sleeping. When the body lacks water, the colon will increase water reabsorption for the body, leading to constipation. Constipation leads to straining and is prone to hemorrhoids. And drinking little water is also one of the causes of colon cancer: accumulation of waste. Therefore, the elderly should drink 3-5 large glasses of water every day. Because the elderly often forget and lose the feeling of thirst, they need to practice the habit of drinking water. However, they need to limit drinking soft drinks, and not drink too much water in the evening.”

The doctor also shared that the elderly need a rich and reasonable diet to avoid malnutrition in old age, which will lead to many other diseases. In particular, the elderly need to supplement enough Calcium - Vitamin D, two nutrients that play an important role in bone formation. Vitamin D participates in many metabolisms in the body, vitamin D deficiency is related to many diseases: poor calcium metabolism, autoimmune diseases, cancer, type 2 diabetes, infections, cardiovascular diseases. The elderly also need to pay attention to osteoporosis, which is a public health issue of great concern worldwide (pain, disability, reduced quality of life and death...).
Osteoporosis is a common disease in the elderly, occurring more in women than in men. It is a metabolic disorder of the skeletal system that damages bone strength, leading to an increased risk of fractures due to an imbalance between bone destruction and bone formation. To prevent osteoporosis, the elderly need to provide calcium and vitamin D according to their needs, exercise regularly, reduce the risk of falls, maintain a reasonable weight, stop smoking, and reduce alcohol consumption. The elderly should also use milk and dairy products such as yogurt, yogurt, and cheese. Because milk helps the elderly replenish energy, increase nutrients, and is easy to digest and absorb."
