For the first time, Hanoi Medical University has a 'sluggish' general medicine major

According to Mr. Nguyen Duc Hinh, Principal of Hanoi Medical University, this year is the first time in the history of the school that the General Medicine major has not recruited enough students for the first round. This is also the common situation of all majors.

Specifically, by August 19 - the final deadline for candidates to register for admission to the school this year, the number of candidates entering the school only reached 71% of the school's target.

In particular, the General Medicine major, which is a very "hot" major, often has enough quotas in the first round of admissions, and even in years when candidates with scores above 27 points still fail, this year there is a shortage of up to 50 quotas.

Mr. Hinh said that the benchmark score for this major last year was 27.75, but the number of students admitted still "just fit" the quota. Meanwhile, this year the benchmark score is only 27, but there is still a lack of candidates.

According to statistics from Hanoi Medical University, as of 9:00 a.m. on August 19, the General Medicine major had a quota of 500 but only 405 students had enrolled. Other majors are similar, with the total quota of the school being 1,100, but only 758 students had enrolled.

“In previous years, depending on the situation, we calculated plus or minus 5% of the quota to determine the admission score. This year, because we anticipated that there would be a number of “fake” candidates, the school determined to remove the standard score at a level where the number of candidates exceeded the quota by 15%, to make allowances, but now there is still a shortage,” said Mr. Hinh.

In addition to the number of candidates who enrolled directly, there may still be some who submitted their applications by mail today that have not yet reached the school, but Mr. Hinh said this number is not large.

“Therefore, it is difficult to recruit more at this time and we do not have much hope. If we do not meet the quota, but the Ministry of Education and Training allows it, we will still accept it to ensure quality,” said Mr. Hinh.

According to Mr. Hinh, Hanoi Medical University has never encountered such a "strange" situation. It is even at risk of not being able to recruit enough students because this is a top school among schools that accept candidates from group B.

Thí sinh dự thi vào trường năm 2014, thời điểm mà mức trúng tuyển vào trường cao chót vót.
Candidates took the entrance exam to the school in 2014, a time when the admission rate to the school was sky high.

"I really don't understand where the high-scoring candidates went. In fact, out of 481 students who applied for admission, only 431 students confirmed their admission today. So where did the rest of the students go when they submitted their applications to the school?", Mr. Hinh was surprised.

If in previous years, when the admission score for the second choice was not lower than the first choice, Hanoi Medical University was almost certain to not be able to recruit enough students. However, this year, schools are allowed to adjust the admission score to meet the quota. Even lower than the admission score for the first choice. Therefore, Mr. Hinh said that the admission score for the second choice will be considered, but the score has not been announced yet because the Admissions Council must meet to agree./.
