Mooncake Market: Price and Quality Matrix

August 23, 2016 10:07

With less than a month left until the Mid-Autumn Festival, mooncake brands have been stepping up their sales. As a seasonal food item, food safety and quality control are always the number one requirements of the market.

Rich variety

As the Mid-Autumn Festival approaches, cake shops are bustling. According to some big branded cake shops such as Mondelez Kinh Do, Bibica, Huu Nghi, Dong Khanh, Long Dinh, Thu Huong, etc., the price of moon cakes this year has increased slightly, ranging from 30,000 to 70,000 VND/piece in the mid-range segment. High-end products cost from 1 to 2 million VND/box.

In addition, famous traditional mooncake shops in Hanoi such as Bao Phuong (Thuy Khue Street), Ninh Huong (Hang Dieu Street), Ba Dan (Hang Be Street), Phuong Soat (Hang Chieu), or handmade cake production establishments also received many orders. The owner of Ba Dan mooncake shop, one of the familiar addresses for people in the old quarter, said that he had prepared a large amount of cakes to serve customers. The price of mooncakes here ranges from 25,000 to 85,000 VND/piece. At Bao Phuong bakery, the price of mooncakes ranges from 30,000 to 80,000 VND/piece...

The prices of mooncakes from big brands and traditional stores are almost the same, but to be chosen by consumers, mooncakes must have a brand, a reputable production facility, a specific address, and a clear quality declaration. Although customers buying mooncakes are increasingly demanding on quality, businesses selling this product are optimistic that purchasing power will increase.

Publicize the name of the violating facility

In order to better control compliance with food safety regulations of moon cake production, import and trading establishments, since the beginning of August, the Hanoi Market Management Department has developed a plan to inspect and control the market; detect, prevent and handle violations of food safety, ensuring consumer rights.

Mr. Nguyen Dac Loc, Deputy Head of the Hanoi Market Management Department, said that the Market Management force will focus on key control, including finished moon cakes, cake production materials, packaging in direct contact with the product... During the inspection process, the Market Management teams will take samples for testing, strictly handle violations, and announce the name of the facility, address, and type of violating product on the mass media for people to know.

Homemade moon cakes are also popular with many customers.

According to Mr. Nguyen Dac Loc, in general, branded mooncake companies comply well with food safety conditions; meanwhile, in traditional mooncake production villages, compliance with food safety conditions has improved significantly. In previous years, food safety violations were mostly discovered in production facilities in craft villages such as: Using raw materials of unknown origin; lack of health certificates; unsanitary production locations; packaging and labels do not clearly state the expiration date...

This year, the Market Management Force has inspected a number of production facilities but has not yet discovered any violations. However, because moon cakes are a seasonal product, produced and consumed within a short period of time, food safety control is a top priority.

Premium mooncakes over 4 million VND/box

In addition to traditional, popular products, manufacturers also launch many high-end cake boxes. Among them, the "Hung Thinh Golden Moon" cake box of Hai Ha Kotobuki (including 8 cakes and 2 tea boxes) costs 990,000 VND. The "Truong Khang Golden Moon Diamond" cake box of Mondelez Kinh Do Vietnam (including 6 cakes and tea boxes) costs 3 million VND. The Long Dinh An Quy cake box (including cakes and a bottle of Ballantines 17) costs 4,388,000 VND.
