The French star will become an assistant to new head coach Roberto Martinez, according to a new decision announced by the Belgian Football Federation on August 26.

“I am honored to be chosen as assistant coach of the Belgian national team. Thank you to head coach Roberto Martinez and the Belgian Football Federation. I am very excited and looking forward to starting my new job right away,” Henry shared on social media.

Meanwhile, coach Martinez commented: “Thierry Henry is an important figure. He will bring something different. He agreed to join our coaching staff immediately.”

Henry's playing experience will be a valuable asset for him to work as Martinez's assistant for the Belgian national team.

The 43-year-old Spanish strategist added: "Henry is someone who knows how to build a collective spirit for the team, knows how to work together to win. He is a World Cup champion in 1998, and has the experience of someone who has achieved great achievements."

Since ending his playing career in December 2014, Henry has worked as a pundit for Sky Sports and coached Arsenal's Under-18s team until leaving the role last month.

The announcement of Henry's appointment as assistant came on the same day Martinez named his first Belgium squad since replacing Marc Wilmots, who was sacked following the Euro 2016 quarter-final defeat.

Henry is expected to be able to impart experience and knowledge to some of the Belgian national team's mainstays playing in the Premier League, including Romelu Lukaku, Christian Benteke, Divock Origi, Michy Batshuayi and Kevin De Bruyne.

The Belgium coaching staff also includes Graeme Jones and fitness coach Richard Evans, two men who worked under Martinez at Swansea, Everton and Wigan.
