Aljazeera quoted Los Angeles Police Chief Charlie Beck, confirming that a man yesterday shot another person and then himself in a university building, and police recovered a gun at the scene. "There are no outstanding suspects and there is no ongoing threat to the UCLA campus," Beck said.

Police also recovered what may be a suicide note, he said.

A law enforcement official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said the victim was a mechanical engineering professor. William S Klug, 39, was shot in his office in the building, according to an official familiar with the investigation.

Some reports within the school community suggested that the motive for the killing was a graduate student angry over a poor grade. However, officials have not confirmed this information. The identity of the shooter has not been determined.

Charles Knobler, a professor of chemistry and biology at UCLA, said those who knew Mr Klug were shocked. He described the professor as a "very lovely, well-liked person".

Violent crime is rare at UCLA, which has 43,000 students, according to federal data. The campus was placed on lockdown and classes were canceled yesterday, but are expected to resume today.
