Earlier, at 7:29 AM on June 14th, a Su-30KM2 aircraft with registration number 8585 of the 923rd Regiment, 371st Division (under the Air Defense - Air Force Command) on a training flight mission departing from Sao Vang airport, Tho Xuan district, Thanh Hoa province, lost contact while performing flight exercise 705+5 (intercepting targets at sea, performing complex aerobatics over the sea).

On the morning of June 14th, Su-30MK2 aircraft number 8585 took off from Sao Vang airport (Tho Xuan district, Thanh Hoa province) to perform a training mission. A few minutes later, at 7:29 AM, the signal from the fighter jet disappeared over the sea off Nghe An province, near Mat Island.

The two pilots on the missing Su-30MK2 were both highly experienced: Lieutenant Colonel Tran Quang Khai (43 years old, Deputy Regiment Commander and Chief of Staff of Regiment 923) and Major Nguyen Huu Cuong (39 years old), Deputy Squadron Commander of Squadron 1, Regiment 923.

On June 15th, pilot Major Nguyen Huu Cuong was rescued by a fishing boat in Ha Tinh province and subsequently approached by a vessel from the authorities, who brought him ashore.

At noon on June 16th, a CASA 212 aircraft, registration number 8983, suddenly lost contact while searching for a crashed Su-30MK2 fighter jet. There were 6 officers and 3 professional soldiers on board. The crash site was tentatively identified east of the demarcation line in the Gulf of Tonkin, 3 nautical miles away. Later that evening, forces on the ground recovered some debris from the aircraft.
