India deploys missiles near Chinese border

The Indian government's move to deploy a regiment of BrahMos supersonic missiles to the border is seen as a move to deter China.

Times of India today quoted military sources as saying that the Indian government has allowed the country's army to deploy a regiment of BrahMos supersonic cruise missiles.in the northeastern mountainous region, bordering China

This is seen as a move to strengthen deterrence against Beijing.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has approved the deployment of a BrahMos missile regiment with around 100 missiles at a cost of over 43 billion rupees (about $640.7 million). The regiment will also have five self-propelled launchers on heavy trucks and a mobile command post, sources said.

The regiment will be deployed in the mountainous state of Arunachal Pradesh, where India and China areTerritorial dispute. The two countries have yet to reach an agreement on the border demarcation in this area.

The BrahMos missile has a range of 290 km, is a non-nuclear tactical cruise missile developed by India in cooperation with Russia, and has become a precision weapon equipped for the Indian armed forces.

The above move took place in the context ofChina has recently made repeated threatening moves to intrude into many Indian border posts along the border. China has also increased investment in developing roads and airports near the border, causing concern in India.
