The rescue ship was scheduled to arrive at port at midnight on June 17, but strong winds and waves caused the voyage to be delayed by more than 5 hours.
At 5am, the ship approached the shore but could not dock because of low tide. Rescuers had to use canoes to bring the ship to safety.The body of Lieutenant Colonel Tran Quang Khai was brought ashore. After the ceremony, between two rows of honor guards, his comrades carried him from the canoe, slowly moved him to a car and took him to the Funeral Home of Military Region 4.

The tide was too low, the rescue ship had to dock more than 200 meters from the port, and the authorities had to send a canoe to transfer.

Hundreds of people stayed up all night waiting for the moment when pilot Tran Quang Khai's body was brought ashore.
Lieutenant Colonel Pilot Tran Quang Khai was born in 1971, in Tan Van 2 village, Tan Dinh commune (Lang Giang, Bac Giang), the same hometown as Major Nguyen Huu Cuong. Both were on the SU30 fighter jet that took off from Sao Vang airport, Tho Xuan, Thanh Hoa on a training flight on the morning of June 14. While flying over the sea of Nghe An, the SU30 lost contact. A day later, fishermen found Major Nguyen Huu Cuong floating at sea.

After being laid to rest at the Military Region 4 Funeral Home, Lieutenant Colonel Tran Quang Khai will be moved to the North by the Air Defense - Air Force and a memorial service will be held according to the protocol of the Vietnam People's Army.
On the morning of June 14, Su-30MK2 aircraft numbered 8585 took off from Sao Vang airport (Tho Xuan district, Thanh Hoa) to carry out a training mission. A few minutes later, at 7:29, the signal from the fighter jet disappeared over the waters of Nghe An, near Mat island. The two pilots on the missing Su-30MK2 were both experienced, including Senior Lieutenant Colonel Tran Quang Khai (43 years old, Deputy Regiment Commander, Chief of Staff of Regiment 923) and Major Nguyen Huu Cuong (39 years old), Deputy Squadron Commander of Squadron 1, Regiment 923. On June 15, pilot Major Nguyen Huu Cuong was rescued by a fishing boat in Ha Tinh and was approached by a ship of the authorities, bringing pilot Cuong to shore. At noon on June 16, CASA 212 aircraft with registration number 8983 suddenly lost contact while searching for the crashed Su-30MK2 fighter jet. There were 6 officers and 3 professional soldiers on board. The crash site was tentatively determined to be east of the demarcation line of the Gulf of Tonkin, 3 nautical miles away. In the evening of the same day, the field forces recovered some debris from the aircraft. |
