Gay couple with miraculous triplets

A gay couple in South Africa has attracted attention as they are believed to be the first gay couple in the world to father triplets through surrogacy.

Incredibly, both men's DNA was passed on to them. Christo and Theo Menelaou now have three children at home in Pretoria.

The three babies were born by caesarean section, baby boy Joshua, weighing 1.8kg, baby girl Zoe, weighing 1.4kg and baby girl Kate, weighing 1.3kg at Sunninghill Hospital, Johannesburg. All three babies were born prematurely at 31 weeks on 2 July.

After birth, the three babies were placed on breathing support devices and were constantly monitored until doctors deemed them healthy enough to go home with their families.

The couple never believed they would become parents and are now overjoyed with their three newborn babies.

Speaking to Sky News, Christo Menelaou shared: “When I was gay, I understood that I could never be a parent no matter how much I wanted to.”

And the miracle came when a woman with three children they met at a murder trial involving disabled athlete Oscar Pistorius agreed to give birth for them.

Up to 20 surgeons, anesthesiologists and nurses assisted in the birth of triplets to this gay couple.

South African laws are very strict about surrogacy for two men so the surrogate mother and her husband had to sign a mutual consent form in the presence of a judge to confirm that all parties were willing and willing without any exchange of money (excluding expenses incurred during the pregnancy).

The couple went to an egg bank and chose an embryo which was then fertilized with Christo's sperm and implanted into the pregnant woman's womb along with another embryo also fertilized with Theo's sperm.

And 10 days later it was found that one of the embryos had divided and the surrogate was pregnant with triplets, two of which were identical twins. This is considered an extremely rare phenomenon.

The couple are now celebrating the unthinkable news of becoming parents. They are assisted by two nurses who care for the babies day and night. Each baby is fitted with a monitor connected to a machine that alerts them if they stop breathing.

In fact, the number of children born through surrogacy for gay couples in the world is very small, and the number of gay couples having triplets is even rarer.

“We are very, very lucky people,” Theo said through tears. “We are truly fathers.”
