Due to heavy rain and strong winds in the past 3 days in Dien Chau, about 100 hectares of summer-autumn rice in harvest period have fallen over and been flooded.
According to the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Dien Chau, the rice fields that have fallen are large in the communes of Dien Hoa, Dien Hanh, Dien Thai, Dien Dong, Dien Lien... Due to continuous rain, people cannot harvest, so the possibility of rice sprouting is very high.
Previously, Dien Chau had harvested about 65% of the rice area, and the harvested rice was also facing difficulties in preserving the product. Due to the rain and lack of dryers, the harvested rice was at risk of being of poor quality.

Mr. Nguyen Xuan Dinh, Head of the Department of Agriculture of Quynh Luu district, said: “The phenomenon of rice being knocked down by strong winds has appeared in many communes in the area. However, only following the wind, mainly deep fields, high-yield fields with heavy grain are knocked down. Currently, there are no statistics on the affected area.”
In Yen Thanh, according to the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Yen Thanh district, at the end of August, some localities of the district harvested summer-autumn rice in deep-lying fields. Up to this point, Yen Thanh has harvested nearly 70% of the summer-autumn rice area. These days it is raining, people are temporarily stopping harvesting rice, affecting the progress of harvesting and post-harvest losses, and also affecting the winter crop production season. Mr. Nguyen Huu Duc's family, in Vinh Thanh hamlet, Nam Thanh commune (Yen Thanh) has more than 3 sao of summer-autumn rice. 3 days ago, taking advantage of the sunny weather, the family rented a harvester for the entire area, but after harvesting, it has been raining continuously for several days, making it impossible to dry the rice. Currently, the family is leaving the rice bags in the house, waiting for the sun to take them out to dry. If it continues to rain, the family will take advantage of the floor, porch... to take the rice out and use an electric fan to fan it, to prevent the rice from getting moldy and germinating.

Dien Chau's winter crops were planted early so they were not much affected by the recent rains. |
The rainy weather over the past few days has slowed down the farmers’ harvest. Up to this point, farmers in the province have harvested 25,000/more than 47,000 hectares of summer-autumn rice. It is estimated that about 200 hectares of rice have been damaged by the recent heavy rains.
The Department of Crop Production and Plant Protection recommends: For low-lying areas, farmers should harvest immediately with the motto "green house is better than old field" to avoid local flooding. For highland areas, farmers should not harvest when it is raining. At the same time, localities should focus on clearing sewers and ditches to drain water quickly, to limit flooding and serve the winter crop planting. After harvesting, if the weather is not sunny, farmers should not pile rice into piles, but spread rice on the floor to avoid black rice grains, germination... affecting the quality of rice grains.
For winter crops, especially corn, Mr. Nguyen Tien Duc - Head of the provincial Department of Crop Production and Plant Protection, recommends that localities should use short-term corn varieties and sow seeds in corn pots for planting.
