Young mothers must prove that they are unable to breastfeed their babies in the usual way before they are allowed to buy formula.

New mothers in Egypt are expressing concern over a new government regulation that will prevent mothers from buying subsidized milk powder to save money. From now on, to buy milk powder, women will have to have their breasts measured, have their breasts examined and get a doctor’s permission.

Basically, the regulation requires women who have just given birth to prove that they are unable to breastfeed their children. A very awkward regulation in this case.

Within two weeks after giving birth, women will have time to do breast exams to get a doctor's approval to buy formula.

Egypt spends about $51 million a year subsidizing powdered milk for families with babies. However, recently, domestic milk prices have increased by 40%, causing the cost of subsidies to increase sharply.

In addition, those who will be given priority to buy powdered milk will be mothers of twins or triplets, employees who are still doing heavy work, people with health complications such as diabetes, high blood pressure, etc. who cannot breastfeed.

The move has been criticised by many Egyptian mothers. Several pharmaceutical companies have been blocked by protesters demanding the price of milk be cut.

“Everything is expensive. Electricity, water, gas and now baby formula.” – One mother said.

Meanwhile, authorities blamed pharmaceutical companies for indiscriminately increasing milk prices, forcing the government to no longer be able to subsidize prices and forcing it to issue regulations to tighten the use of powdered milk.
