73-year-old woman burst into tears when sentenced to death

Sentenced to death for carrying 2.8 kg of drugs through Tan Son Nhat airport, the 73-year-old defendant collapsed in the dock of the Ho Chi Minh City People's Court and sobbed.

On June 29, the Ho Chi Minh City People's Court opened a first-instance trial and sentenced defendant Nguyen Thi Huong (73 years old, Australian nationality) to death for the crime of Illegally transporting drugs. When hearing the verdict, this old woman collapsed in front of the dock and burst into tears.

According to the indictment, defendant Huong is a Vietnamese expatriate living in Australia. In early November 2014, she returned to Vietnam to visit relatives and met a woman named Helen (unknown background). Helen gave Ms. Huong 36 bars of foreign branded soap.

On December 10, 2014, this old woman put 36 bars of soap in 2 suitcases and brought them to Tan Son Nhat airport to return to Australia. When checking her luggage, airport customs discovered that the 36 bars of soap contained 2.8 kg of drugs.

At the investigation agency and in court this morning, the defendant stated that Helen gave him the soap and did not know that there were drugs inside. “I am old and sick, I do not have much longer to live, I hope the court will consider giving me a way to live,” the defendant sobbed.
