Miss Vietnam 2016 Final: Too much effort leads to many errors

The competition night was four hours long, with invested guest performances, a modern stage, and four MCs leading the way, but because of that, the program lacked focus on the contestants.

In addition to the Ao Dai, swimsuit, and evening gown competitions of the 30 contestants, the audience enjoyed performances by international star Bi (Rain), Vietnamese singers such as Thu Minh, Noo Phuoc Thinh, Toc Tien, Dong Nhi, Ha Anh Tuan... Each artist appeared magnificently, combined with a team of dancers or had their own stage scenes. Toc Tien and Dong Nhi also overwhelmed the audience when they wore sexy clothes, swung down on cables to the stage, and performed hotly.

Bi Rain appeared to have little connection with the contestants.

Interspersed between the performances are videos introducing the contestants' journeys in the competition, individual introductions, and videos about the top 30's charity projects.

The stage was designed with the theme of Pearl of the Far East, using a modern 3D Led Matrix lighting system, making the space splendid, magical, and the images clear. Director Hoang Nhat Nam used up to 30 tons of equipment to build the stage. The competition also invested quite a lot when inviting four MCs to lead the program.

However, it was in that elaborateness that the "greed" for details was revealed, making the final night drag on, overshadowing the central characters, the contestants.

Typically, in the swimsuit competition, the contestants' performances that should have been invested in were not given much attention. The 30 beauties still appeared in a simple, traditional way. Interspersed between the performances of each group, Toc Tien and Dong Nhi "exploded" with hot costumes and impressive choreography, making the audience almost forget about the contestants. The swimsuit performance of the Top 30 therefore became dull.

Likewise, Bi (Rain)'s appearance was more to honor himself and the reputation of the Organizing Committee (when inviting expensive foreign stars) than the contestants. Bi (Rain) sang four songs and in the last song, the top 30 paraded on stage as if to "illustrate" him. The audience expected Bi (Rain) to sing and interact with the top 10 in the evening gown competition. If that had happened, his appearance would have been more "valuable", more in tune with the program and the contestants would have been more honored.

In an effort to change, the Organizing Committee also renewed the program format. That is, all 30 contestants performed all three parts: ao dai, swimsuit, evening gown, and then the top 10 were named. Normally, in beauty pageants both domestically and internationally, the top 10 are named after the swimsuit competition and only the top 10 perform in evening gown. This helps the judges and the audience to focus on evaluating and clearly seeing the strengths of each contestant, thereby choosing the best girls for the behavioral round. With the new format, the audience - especially those watching on TV - will find it difficult to judge who deserves to be in the top 5.

This year, the contest awarded many subsidiary awards and the beauties all went on stage to receive the awards, making both the presenters and the recipients fumble in front of the camera. During the coronation moment, because the previous Miss Ky Duyen was not allowed to appear, the person who presented the crown was the head of the organizing committee. Mr. Le Xuan Son had no experience so he needed support when placing the crown on Do My Linh's head. The coronation moment was therefore somewhat less glamorous, although it was beyond the control of the organizing committee.

Another noticeable flaw in the show was the MCs. There were four MCs but the show was not much different as they took turns speaking. During the introduction, all four stood on stage waiting for each other to speak according to the script, making the audience feel that it was unnecessary.

Not to mention, MC Manh Cuong was judged to be unlucky and lost his composure at important moments such as calling the winner's name. MC Duc Bao encouraged contestant Dao Thi Ha in the behavioral round by asking her more questions (like when he hosts other TV shows), causing the contestant to stray from the judges' questions. The MCs also lacked the ability to juggle or interact with the audience.

Did the MC's mistake accidentally affect the answer that was considered decisive for contestant Dao Thi Ha?

Some other "mistakes" such as the broadcast camera capturing a lot of "garbage" images, rarely filming close-ups of contestants but mainly panning the whole scene, or occasional sound problems making the program less than perfect.
