Typhoon fighter jets took off from an air base in Scotland yesterday to intercept two Russian Tu-160 bombers approaching UK airspace, according to AFP.

The British Ministry of Defence said the two Russian aircraft flew from Norway and passed over the area west of the Shetland Islands, located northeast of mainland Britain, but did not violate British airspace.

"Typhoon rapid-response fighters scrambled from Lossiemouth air base to intercept and escort two Russian aircraft while they were in an area of UK interest," a Royal Air Force spokesperson confirmed.

Two other aircraft were also scrambled from an air base in eastern England as a "precautionary measure".

The Russian Ministry of Defense has not yet responded to the information from the UK.

British and Russian military officials held discussions in late 2015 about "incursions" by Russian aircraft around the United Kingdom.

In February 2016, London deployed Typhoon fighter jets to intercept a Russian bomber near Lincolnshire airspace in England.
