On March 12, the Ministry of Industry and Trade issued Decision 2256 regulating electricity prices, applicable from March 16, with an average retail electricity price of VND 1,622.01/kWh (excluding VAT).

Accordingly, the household electricity price list includes 6 levels, the lowest is 1,484 VND/kWh and the highest is 2,587 VND/kWh. Specifically, level 1 (first 50 kWh) retail price of household electricity is 1,484 VND/kWh; level 2 (51-100 kWh): 1,533 VND/kWh; level 3 (101-200 kWh): 1,786 VND/kWh; level 4 (201-300 kWh): 2,242 VND/kWh; level 5 (301-400 kWh): 2,503 VND/kWh and level 6 (401 kWh or more): 2,587 VND/kWh.

The retail price for card meters is 2,141 VND/kWh. For production entities, the highest retail price for electricity during peak hours is 2,735 VND/kWh, during normal hours is 1,453 VND/kWh and at off-peak hours is 869 VND/kWh.

For the administrative sector, the highest retail electricity price is 2,735 VND/kWh, the lowest is 1,460 VND/kWh.

As for businesses, they will have to pay a fairly high retail electricity price, the highest electricity price is 3,991 VND/kWh, the lowest is 1,185 VND/kWh.

According to the Valuation Association's calculations, the 7.5% increase in electricity prices will impact the consumer price index (CPI) by about 0.369%. At the same time, it will cause steel billet prices to increase by 0.45% and cement prices to increase by 2.25%.

For households using less than 100 kWh/month, the monthly electricity bill will increase by about 6,000 VND; for households using 100-300 kWh/month, the electricity bill will increase by 18,900 VND/month. For households using more than 300 kWh/month, the electricity bill will increase by 59,064 VND/month.

As for Vietnam Electricity Group (EVN), at the meeting announcing the electricity price adjustment held last weekend, Mr. Dinh Quang Tri - Deputy General Director of EVN said that with the increase in input costs, the electricity price should have increased by 12.8% to be enough for the "power plant" to offset all the accumulated losses from previous years. However, with the adjustment of only 7.5% coming up, EVN will only be able to offset about 1,000 billion VND in exchange rate differences, while the group will gradually offset over 7,000 billion VND in the following years. Also according to EVN's calculations, the electricity price adjustment from March 16 is expected to increase the group's revenue by 13,000 billion VND, with profits of about 1,500 billion VND (equivalent to 1%).
