50,000 workers entering and exiting Apple's phone assembly plant must pass through a rigorous system of facial recognition and metal detectors.
The American technology giant Apple has just revealed images of Pegatron Corp., a massive factory in China that assembles iPhones.
The Pegatron factory in Shanghai employs 50,000 people and occupies an area 90 times the size of a football field. To enter the premises, workers must pass through multiple security gates. They then climb a staircase with safety nets in the middle – to prevent accidents or suicides – to the changing rooms and line up.

Workers arriving at the Pegatron factory at 9 a.m. must pass through metal detectors to screen out any recording devices they might be trying to conceal. Before starting their shift at Apple's most heavily guarded factory, they must line up neatly like in the military and undergo roll call.
Each worker has a unique identification card and must swipe it on the supervisor's iPad tablet. Next, they line up and walk through a security gate equipped with facial recognition technology. After all these steps, each person has six minutes to reach the assembly plant.

Until now, all the work done inside the Pegatron factory has remained a closely guarded secret. But for the first time, Apple and Pegatron have allowed a Bloomberg reporter inside to tour the factory after years of accusations that they forced workers to work long hours for low pay.
According to China's Labor Supervision Administration, the basic wage here is so low that employees are forced to work overtime to make ends meet. One worker said her salary was only about 2,020 yuan per month (over 6.9 million VND). Meanwhile, an iPhone 6 sells for 4,488 yuan in China.
