(Baonghean.vn) - Residents of the city of Norilsk in Russia are in a state of panic after several photos circulated on social media showing the Daldykan River flowing through the city strangely turning blood red.

Photos posted on social media showed the Daldykan River turning a purplish red. Local officials have so far refused to explain what caused the unusual phenomenon, but residents have begun to link the blood-red hue to the presence of a large metal processing plant upstream.

Norilsk is one of the most polluted cities in Russia, with numerous heavy metal factories located throughout the city. Most of these factories belong to the Norilsk Nickel Company.

Citizens of Norilsk believe the river's discoloration is related to wastewater discharge from a nearby metallurgical plant. They explain the red color as a combination of wastewater combined with ore metal leaking from the plant.

Evgeny Belikob, who used to work at the plant, said that workers at the plant also called one of the plant's wastewater reservoirs the "Red Sea" because of the presence of ore in the wastewater.

The Russian city of Norilsk is located within the Arctic Circle. “In winter, the snow is also red. Red snow is beautiful, but it is actually a chemical,” Belikov wrote on social media.

So far, the factory that locals believe is responsible for turning the river red has not responded, while local emergency management agencies say they are unaware of the incident.
