Creating a 'Facebook for King Quang Trung': What do young 'authors' say?

King Quang Trung's Facebook timeline is a product of the reading comprehension activity of the work Hoang Le Nhat Thong Chi (Ngo Gia Van Phai) in the 9th grade Literature program, organized by teachers to study at stations.

Accordingly, three groups of students in class 9G were assigned to complete three products including: A timeline summarizing the events of King Quang Trung's lightning-fast march to Thang Long (students choose the form, the teacher only suggests on Facebook timeline); Learning about the image of King Quang Trung (mind map); Learning about the edict of King Quang Trung - Nguyen Hue.

These three products were presented by three groups in class to ensure that the whole class fully grasped the lesson content. Ms. Ngo Thu Giang, the Literature teacher who directly instructed the students, said that she highly appreciated the students' creativity, ability to express themselves, and reading comprehension.

Discussing the question, why did the group of students present it in the form of a Facebook page and not through other forms of expression? Ms. Thu Giang said that the timeline was suggested because there is a great similarity between the way the author narrates events, describes moods, emotions... and the characteristics expressed on the timeline of a Facebook page.

The knowledge that students demonstrate above is assigned by the teacher to study the textbook and find information on the internet. For any information that is not in the textbook, students must fully cite the source.

After the first image of this exercise was posted on the school's fanpage, the group of students received great attention from the online community.

“We were really surprised to learn that this product received such great attention, because it can be said that this is a learning activity that is not too unfamiliar to students at our school, and this idea has also been used by some other classes to demonstrate knowledge in their assignments and projects,” said a representative of the student group.

It is known that this assignment does not have a specific score because this score requires another article to be considered. However, Ms. Thu Giang is quite interested and satisfied with this product.

Student Doan Hoang Nhi, representative of the group of authors on Facebook for King Quang Trung, shared, “No matter how many points we get, the group is very satisfied because this is an interesting way to learn, easy to remember and easy to systematize knowledge. Compared to reading simple text, this way of learning is more intuitive, concise and much more interesting.”

She added that at first, we discussed whether we should add English hashtags like #victory and #slay to our work. To make this decision, we sat down together and carefully considered how to make our product creative, humorous and marked by the information technology era without being ridiculous or distorting history.

In addition, the hometown of King Quang Trung introduced in the biography is also a detail that we have researched very carefully before adding to the article, because people often confuse his hometown and birthplace. King Quang Trung is exactly of Ho origin and his hometown is Nghe An, although he was born and raised in Binh Dinh, so we use the word "From" to refer to his hometown instead of "Born in" (place of birth).

Speaking to reporters, Ms. Pham Thi Minh An, Principal of Olympia High School, said that unlike the current learning methods in many high schools, students here are encouraged to think critically and creatively through different forms of expression, ensuring diverse assessment criteria based on students' abilities. This is also not the first year Olympia students have used this form to demonstrate their knowledge.

During the 2015-2016 school year, this group of students also experienced learning in a different way through an interdisciplinary project of Literature - History - Communication called: "Human fate in war through historical photos". This project also won first prize in the "National Interdisciplinary Integrated Teaching Competition 2015-2016 school year".
