Shrimp exports for the whole year are expected to exceed $3 billion.
Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development Nguyen Xuan Cuong said that shrimp exports are expected to achieve relatively good results this year, reaching over 3 billion USD, bringing the total value of seafood exports for the year to over 7 billion USD.
According to Minister Nguyen Xuan Cuong, the total area for shrimp farming this year reached 660,000 hectares, with a potential shrimp production of 680,000 tons. It is expected that the shrimp farming area will be increased to approximately 700,000 hectares in the near future.
With two major product groups, tiger shrimp and whiteleg shrimp, shrimp farming has enormous potential for growth. To ensure the expansion of shrimp farming areas, securing a reliable source of shrimp fry is a crucial factor.

“Currently, for whiteleg shrimp, 131 enterprises have initially participated in successfully receiving and purchasing broodstock from abroad to produce shrimp larvae. Domestic broodstock production currently meets about 20% of the actual demand. It is estimated that in 3-5 years, with the development of enterprises in this field, Vietnam can basically master broodstock production,” Minister Nguyen Xuan Cuong emphasized.
Regarding tiger shrimp, the main species currently being utilized from the wild, the demand is being met in the short term. The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development is focusing on directing research on several topics to address the issue of tiger shrimp broodstock, as this is a particularly promising area for expanding aquaculture with high economic value.
Regarding recent information that the United States has imposed relatively high anti-dumping duties on Vietnamese shrimp exports, Minister Nguyen Xuan Cuong expressed his view: Having accepted the international playing field, Vietnam naturally has to confront such issues. The management agency's stance is that when a situation arises, it is necessary to find ways to respond, and businesses are urged to have the same correct perspective. Currently, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development is coordinating with the Ministry of Industry and Trade to discuss the next steps.
In addition to efforts to address the issue of anti-dumping duties on shrimp from the United States, expanding into other markets is also a key focus for the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development.
Recently, leaders from the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development visited Australia to promote the export of whole shrimp products. It is expected that in November, the Australian side will conduct a comprehensive inspection of Vietnam's conditions, opening up prospects for boosting shrimp exports in particular, and seafood exports in general.
