On September 21, the Provincial People's Court opened a first-instance criminal trial to try the case of illegal drug trafficking against Ho Manh Cuong (born in 1979), residing in Hamlet 5, Dien Thanh Commune, Dien Chau District, and Cao Van Thanh (born in 1993), residing in Dien Loc, Dien Chau.

Ho Manh Cuong and Cao Van Thanh are both drug addicts. In January 2016, Cuong bought 100g of crystal meth, 50g of ketamine and 300 ecstasy pills for 135 million VND. In addition, the supplier gave Cuong a small package of heroin to try selling. Cuong brought the drugs to his place to hide and divide them into small pieces to sell to drug addicts for profit. On the evening of January 20, 2016, Cuong gave Thanh 12 packages of crystal meth and instructed him to hide them and sell them for Cuong when Thanh was away.

On January 21, 2016, a person in Quy Hop district called to buy 5 grams of crystal meth, Cuong agreed to sell for 4 million VND. Cuong hid the drugs in a toy car and called Thanh to take them to the bus station in Quy Hop. While Thanh was waiting for the bus station, he was discovered by the police and arrested along with the evidence. Ho Manh Cuong was arrested shortly after. Searching Cuong's residence, the police seized 243 synthetic drug pills and 23 packages of crystal meth, 15 packages of ketamine, and 1 package of heroin.

At the trial, Ho Manh Cuong and Cao Van Thanh confessed their crimes. Distinguishing the roles of each defendant in the case, the panel sentenced Ho Manh Cuong to 12 years in prison and Cao Van Thanh to 2 years and 6 months in prison.
