Critics of the one-child policy focused on negative social consequences, particularly gender discrimination. The abandonment of female infants, a practice prevalent before 1949, gradually resurfaced in some areas shortly after the policy came into effect. By 1986, a severe gender imbalance had occurred in China. (Image: Daily Mail)
