"My husband and I went to work in the fields in the evening. They tied my husband to a tree while Surjit and another man grabbed me. Then Surjit threw acid on me. He had raped me. I filed a case and they threatened not to let it go," Reuters quoted the 30-year-old victim from Uttar Pradesh state as saying on September 26.

The woman suffered burns to her face and neck. She was treated at a local hospital and is in stable condition.

She was raped on 8 August but the police reportedly remained silent for a month. Her family was forced to withdraw the case. Among the acid attackers is a man suspected of raping the victim. Uttar Pradesh police are hunting for the suspects.

India is home to more than 1,000 acid attacks each year, most of which go unreported due to fear of reprisals for reporting them. Acid is still widely available in the country because it is used in the production of cotton and rubber.
