Goat farming in Dien Kim - a hobby that yields real profits.
(Baonghean.vn) – Besides traditional seafaring, in the last four years, people in the coastal area of Dien Kim (Dien Chau) have also developed commercial goat farming. This livestock requires little investment but brings high income to farmers.
The coastal grasslands of Dien Kim are the main food source and grazing ground for goats in the area. Favorable conditions for developing commercial goat farming have led many locals to invest in this model in recent years.

Two years ago, Mr. Nguyen Van Vuong in Dien Kim commune bought four female goats for 17 million VND to raise them using a grazing method. All four developed well, so the herd increased quite quickly, at times reaching over 30 goats. Regularly, in the early morning or late afternoon, he would lead the goats to graze on grass and leaves.
Mr. Vuong said: "Goats are easy to raise, don't require much investment, and their food source is mainly grass and leaves found in nature, which are readily available in rural areas. During the rainy season, the goats are kept in enclosures and fed leaves. Last year alone, my family earned over 50 million VND from selling commercial goats."

| When the weather is unfavorable, many households keep their goats confined and gather leaves to feed them, helping to prevent the animals from getting sick. |
Raising goats has many advantages. Initially, you only need to invest in buying female goats. Once mature, these goats will reproduce twice a year, with an average of 2-3 offspring each time. The male goats are raised for sale, while the female offspring are kept until their next breeding season. In this way, many households have acquired dozens of goats despite starting with only 2-3 goats and a small initial investment. Besides readily available breeding stock, goats primarily feed on natural plants and leaves, allowing farmers to earn a considerable profit.
Mr. Le Tri, residing in Tien Tien 1 hamlet, is the longest-standing and largest goat farmer in the commune, with a total herd of 40 goats. He started raising goats in 2014, selling approximately 20 goats annually and keeping 15 female goats for breeding in subsequent years. Each goat sells for 5 million VND, bringing his family's total income from goat farming to nearly 100 million VND per year.

To prevent common diseases in goats, local people use betel leaves and a mixture of garlic and vinegar to keep the animals warm during seasonal changes. Thanks to being raised using safe practices, the free-range goats of Dien Kim have good quality, firm meat, which is favored by the market.
Currently, the price of commercial goat meat is 140,000 VND/kg. On average, each goat ready for slaughter weighs between 40-50kg and is priced at around 5 million VND per animal. Families raising a large number of goats can sell 10-20 goats per year, bringing in nearly 100 million VND in income.

| Farmers in Dien Kim have developed a goat farming model that generates a decent income. |
Previously, goats were a common livestock in many mountainous districts, but in recent years, farmers in Dien Kim have learned to capitalize on the advantages of natural conditions to develop this model, bringing in significant income. Mr. Pham Xuan Bang, Chairman of the Dien Kim Commune People's Committee, said: "Currently, 13 hamlets in Dien Kim commune have households raising goats for commercial purposes; the total goat herd is nearly 500. The local authorities encourage people to develop goat farming, while also warning farmers to always pay attention to monitoring their goats to avoid damaging crops. In the future, the commune plans to zone goat farming areas to develop this effective livestock model in the locality."
