Da Nang Hospital performs bone marrow stem cell transplant
With the support of a team of experts and leading professors in stem cell transplantation from Kitano Hospital (Osaka, Japan), Da Nang Hospital performed a bone marrow stem cell transplant for the patient.
The first person to receive a bone marrow stem cell transplant was a male patient, residing in Son Tra District, Da Nang, who had a traffic accident 6 months ago and suffered a cervical spinal cord injury, quadriplegia, urinary incontinence, and had to move around in a wheelchair. This patient had undergone surgery at the hospital but was unable to recover.

It is known that Da Nang Hospital is the second unit in the country after Viet Duc Hospital to apply stem cell transplantation in the treatment of spinal cord injuries.
Dr. Nguyen Ngoc Ba, Deputy Director of Da Nang Hospital, said that spinal cord injury causing paralysis is a common disease in Vietnam after traffic accidents, work accidents or sports activities. Each year, Da Nang Hospital receives about 400 to 500 cases of spinal cord injury, of which about 100 cases require surgery.
The total cost of the first stem cell transplant for this male patient at Da Nang Hospital was about 40 million VND, fully supported by a team of professors and experts from Kinato Hospital, Japan.
The delegation of Japanese professors and experts will continue to support the cost of treatment using this method for the first 30 cases of spinal cord injury who come for treatment at Da Nang Hospital during this time.
