Genesis G90 sold in Vietnam - new rival of Mercedes S-class

The large luxury sedan launched on September 30, using a 5-liter V8 engine, is expected to compete with the Mercedes S-class or BMW 7 series.

Genesis G90 is the first new product of Hyundai's luxury car division since its official separation in November 2015, but it is not a strange model. The G90 is actually the 3rd generation of Equus, which is gradually becoming familiar in the Vietnamese market.

The G90 design has major changes compared to the Equus. The old trapezoidal grille is replaced by a hexagonal one in the current general Hyundai design style. The shape of the headlights, fog lights, front bumper and overall is more refined and technologically oriented. The G90 does not have many differences in appearance compared to its two younger brothers, the G70 and G80.

The interior clearly shows the quality of a large luxury sedan more than the exterior. The dashboard has a large 12.3-inch infotainment screen, along with two 9.2-inch screens for the rear seats. The Lexicon sound system has 17 separate speakers and amplifiers integrated with Quantum Logic standard.

Like its rivals, the G90 follows the trend of using walnut wood and metal for panels and buttons. The large center console with knobs and clocks resembles the Mercedes style. The steering wheel is a bit less refined when it is forced to follow the hexagonal inspiration like other details.

Amenities include 22-way power leather seats with ventilation and heating, 3-position memory for all seats. 3-zone independent air conditioning system, push-button start, curtains, wireless charging, head-up display, sunroof.

Genesis's flagship sedan in Vietnam has two engine versions, the Lambda 3.8-liter V6 and the Tau 5-liter V8. The Lambda engine produces 308 horsepower and 391 Nm of maximum torque. Meanwhile, the higher version has 413 horsepower and 505 Nm.

Both versions come with an 8-speed automatic transmission with paddle shifters on the steering wheel. The 3.8 version uses rear-wheel drive while the 5.0 version is equipped with HTRAC all-wheel drive. The car has 4 driving modes including Smart, Eco, Sport and Individual.

The car uses dozens of safety technologies such as ABS anti-lock brakes, BA emergency brake assist, EBD electronic brake force distribution, ESC electronic balance, VSM body control, TCS traction control, HAC hill start assist. G90 has 9 airbags, 8 front and rear sensors, tire pressure sensor, 360 camera, smart cruise control.

The Korean car company tries to integrate many technologies and pay attention to detailed designs to be able to compete fairly with traditional rivals from Germany such as Mercedes S-class, BMW series 7, Audi A8 or from Japan Lexus LS.

Hyundai learned from the experience of other companies that started with mass-market cars, which is to separate the luxury car division to avoid confusing brand values. This company has learned from the lesson of its brother.Kia when K900 was not successful in the US, despite good reviews from the media and industry experts. Customers find it difficult to accept luxury cars with popular labels.

Hyundai Thanh Cong has not announced the price of Genesis G90 in Vietnam, the car is available at dealers with two color options: white and black.
