Poland has one of the strictest abortion laws in Europe. Except in cases of fetal abnormalities that affect the mother's health, or pregnancies resulting from rape or incest, abortion is prohibited in this country.

However, according to the new draft law, abortion will be completely banned under any circumstances. Women who have abortions could face up to five years in prison. Doctors who assist in abortions will also be prosecuted and imprisoned.

Although this new ban is supported by the Polish Church, many people have opposed it. They argue that the law would make miscarriage a crime, and doctors would be afraid to perform prenatal examinations for fear of repercussions.

Women, and some men in particular, staged protests in Warsaw, Gdansk, and numerous other cities across Poland. They dressed in black and waved black flags to protest the harsh new abortion laws. In Czestochowa, a predominantly Catholic city, 60% of female workers went on strike.

Polish women believe that the right to choose their reproductive rights is a fundamental human right. Laws prohibiting abortion would violate their safety and dignity.

In response to the protesters, Jaroslaw Kaczynski, head of the Law and Justice Party, suggested a compromise: the government could ban abortions only for fetal abnormalities, while abortions resulting from rape or incest would still be permitted.
