Coach Huu Thang adds central defender for AFF Cup campaign

Hai Phong Club member Dang Quang Huy has just received a call-up to the Vietnam national team to prepare for the tournament starting in November.

Returning from Indonesia, coach Nguyen Huu Thang immediately called up Dang Quang Huy andViettel's central defender Bui Tien Dung is on the national team.

Today, October 11, these two players will be in Saigon to join the team.

This is the first time Quang Huy has been called up to the national team. The player born in 1992 can play well in the positions of center back and midfielder. He is considered by coach Huu Thang and the coaching staff as a suitable addition to the current Vietnamese team.

However, Quang Huy's call-up was somewhat surprising, as he had not played well in the past two seasons. In the 2015 V-League, he played for Can Tho on loan and only played 12 matches. Returning to Hai Phong last season, Quang Huy was mostly a substitute.

With the injury in the 5-2 win over North Korea on October 7, central defender Que Ngoc Hai will have to recuperate for a month, and is not sure to regain his form and fitness in time to participate in the AFF Cup 2016. The addition of Quang Huy will help coach Huu Thang have another option in defense.

Through the last two friendly matches, Coach Huu Thang showed that he was not confident with the quality of the defense."The 2-2 draw with Indonesia is acceptable, but we have to improve our defense. If the defense played well, we would not have deserved to concede the second goal," he said after landing at Tan San Nhat on the afternoon of October 10.

Today, coach Nguyen Huu Thang and his team will practice at Thong Nhat Stadium at 3:30 p.m.

The Vietnamese team will stay in Saigon for five days and then fly to Korea for training from October 15.
