This statement was made by Kurt Campbell, a former US State Department official and representative for Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton's campaign, on October 11th.

Last July, South Korea and the United States agreed to deploy missile defense systems in the town of Seongju, amid rising tensions in Northeast Asia and on the Korean Peninsula.

Tensions stem from North Korea's recent ballistic missile tests, as well as its two nuclear tests this year.

"This is a fitting step, a project that the U.S. has always supported, and we are preparing to continue pursuing it," Kurt Campbell said about the THAAD missile defense system at a meeting held in Washington DC on October 11.

China and Russia both oppose the US deployment of the THAAD missile defense system in South Korea. These countries accuse the deployed missile defense system of not only countering threats from North Korea but also potentially affecting China's and Russia's interests in the region.

THAAD is a highly accurate American missile defense system designed to shoot down ballistic missiles in the terminal phase of their trajectory. THAAD is capable of countering a wide range of threats with its mobility and strategic deployment capabilities.
