A British study shows that worrying a lot not only affects your mental health but also makes you more likely to die from cancer.

According to Men's Health, analyzing data from 15,000 British people, scientists at Cambridge University (UK) discovered that the death rate from cancer within 15 years of men with anxiety disorders is twice as high as normal people. Under the influence of psychological stress, this group also exercised less and often suffered from diseases related to cancer.

Explaining the above phenomenon, Dr. Olivia Remes, head of the research team, said that prolonged anxiety causes stress hormones such as cortisol to increase. This hinders the cell's ability to repair DNA, creating the opportunity for cancer cells to form as well as promoting the development of tumors or cancer-causing mutations.

Dr. Remes said more research is needed to confirm the link between anxiety and cancer. He recommended that people with anxiety disorders seek help from family, friends, and doctors as soon as possible. Typical signs of the disease include uncontrollable worry, difficulty concentrating, and insomnia. Depending on the case, patients will receive cognitive behavioral therapy, anti-anxiety medication, or a combination of both.
